Unto Christopher Black Lion and the esteemed members of the An Tir College of Heralds to whom this missive comes, Richenda du Jardin, Lions Blood Herald, sends greetings and felicitations.

COMMENTARY ON THE ITEMS IN THIS INTERNAL LETTER IS DUE ON THE 10TH OF JANUARY.

The November Lions Blood meeting will be held at 1:00 at my house. The December meeting will be held December 18 and the January meeting will be held January 22 (so as to not conflict with Coronation). As of this moment, those meetings will also be held at my house. I am looking for people to host meetings in February (19) and March (19). Directions to my house are:

From the West: Take your best route to I-90. Get off on exit 280 (Lincoln Ave/Maple Ave.). Go through two lights and turn right at the next intersection (Jefferson). Go one block and turn left (Fifth). Turn right at the fourth stop sign (Howard). Follow Howard for two blocks — find whatever parking you can in the second block as parking is rather tight. Walk up to 7th and I am in the brick building on the left (524 W 7th.). Buzz apartment #510 and someone will be down to get you.

Greetings An Tir!

I am searching for my Just Add Water deputy, Queue Forchée Herald. The job description is fairly simple - mostly assist me with tasks as needed, be ready to step in should I be unavailable and act as my Emergency Contingency Deputy. This is a good position to apply for if you are considering becoming Black Lion at some time in the future. Being Queue Forchée does not assure you of being selected but it is good training.

I am also seeking people who can help make some new Kingdom tabards. I have had to retire two of the three active tabards we had. If you've been wondering why Their Majesties' retinue herald hasn't been wearing a Kingdom tabard, that's why. I hope to be publishing more information on the new tabard creation project along with my long-since promised article on tabards next month.

From Lions Blood

First things first, I would like to thank Baron David of Moffat, Electrum Herald, for performing the duties of Boar Pursuivant while we took letters of intent. Fortunately for Baron David, we have offered the position to Li Ban ingen Echtigeirn. I want to thank all of the candidates for making this a difficult decision.

For the October meeting, we had four new commenters!! In case I don't say it enough, thanks to all my commenters. It's a job that is too often overlooked, but extremely important to making the heraldic process work in An Tir.

This month's letter will be a little short. I've had an attack of life during the last week of October, with my partner down with bronchitis and the loss of a dear friend back East. However, the letter must go out, and so it shall.

Many of you must realize that you are now getting the Herald's Page when you weren't getting it before. That is because I wanted to make sure that all the heralds (that I knew of) in the kingdom had the opportunity to be involved in the heraldic submissions process. Unfortunately, this isn't cheap. Our copying and postage costs are averaging a dollar per copy created in kingdom. Therefore, this will be the last free paper issue – electronic copies are still free! So, if you want to continue to receive the Heralds Page, you will need to either purchase a paper edition ($12/year – sent to Pursestrings, info below) or you will need to subscribe electronically. If you are a branch herald, please ask your branch to support your role in the submissions process. If you are a kingdom staff herald, the kingdom absorbs that cost for you.

1. Æthan of Eppelhyrste Madrone Name & Device – New

Sable, a nesselblatt and a bordure embattled Or

The submitter will not accept changes to his name. He is interested in a male name, and will permit a holding name to be formed.

Æthan is found in Withycombe, Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names, sub Aidan, where the author indicates that this name is derived from the diminutive of the Irish Aid, and which diminutive was used by a 7th century monk in Lindesfarne, and which name appears in Old English in the submitted 
form.

"of" is intended to be the locative precursor, but the submitter notes that he will accept æt if that is deemed appropriate, but that he was unable to find any documentation for the use of <name> æt <location>, and that "most non-king/clergy Anglo-Saxon folks just seem to be <name>, clearly because they were being petty and contemptuous for future SCA naming practices, the inconsiderate hairy hooligans; I'd prefer "of.""

Eppelhyrste is a location name in an Anglo-Saxon charter found at 
http://www.anglo-saxons.net/hwaet/ ?do=get&type=charter&id=259 . The submitter notes "I'm not attached to this spelling, but do think it's rather nifty."



2. An Tir, Kingdom of - Loyall Pursevant   Heraldic Title – New

The kingdom name was registered in 1981.

The submitter will accept any changes necessary for registration. If changes are required, the submitter is most interested in the language and culture. The submitter is interested in a name authentic for the language, culture and time period of 1500's England.

The title is submitted as a title based on a motto. Examples of this pattern include Ich Dien Pursuivant and Esperance Pursuivant.

Loyall is intended to be the French word for loyal or loyally. Examples of mottoes from around the end of period containing this word include from Harvey et al, A Guide to British Medieval Seals (1996): la demoisele est bon leal; lel ami avet; lel su; and loylement une. From Siddons, The Development of Welsh Heraldry, vol. III (1993): Loial (early 17th century); Loyall a morte (early 17th century) and Loyal en bon vouloir (1592). The OED, sub loyal shows the spelling of loyall in English in 1531, 1595 and 1598. The 1598 use is from Shakespeare, Merry Wives of 
Windsor, and comes from "Each faire Instalment, Coate, and seu'rall Crest, With loyall Blazon, euermore be blest"

The spelling Pursevant is found in the OES, sub pursuivant, where reference to Johnne Calder, Bute Pursevant, in 1572-3 is made.



3. Ayleth Fairamay Lions Gate Device – New

Azure, a mullet of six points and in chief three violets argent

The submitter's name is on the June 2005 An Tir Letter of Intent



4. Azemar de Lyon False Island Device – Resubmission

Argent, on a cross cotised sable, five apples stemmed and leaved Or

The submitter's name is on the May 2005 An Tir Letter of Intent.

His prior submission, Argent, on a cross sable five apples slipped and leaved Or, was returned in May 2005 for conflict with the Teutonic Order, Argent, a cross sable. This resubmission addresses that conflict.



5. Brianna Wulfbeald An Tir Device – Appeal of return of change of device

Per saltire vert and sable

If this submission is registered, the submitter wants her current device, Per fess purpure and vert, a fess embattled between a moon in her plentitude and a she-wolf passant contourny argent, changed to a badge.

This device was returned in April 2004 for conflict with the armory of Rivka Vladimirovna Rivkina, Per pall Or, vert and sable. First, because per pall is not amongst the field divisions listed in RfS X.4.a.ii.(a), Lions Blood found that the difference between the two fields were not substantially different, and required this submission to be considered under RfS X.4.a.ii(b) or (c). Because the two devices share tinctures, it could not be considered under (b). Because the devices shared two tinctures, Lions Blood found that at least half the field was not changed, and therefore found only one difference for the number pieces in the field.

The submitter appeals this on the basis that per pall was inadvertently left off the list of partitions that are substantially different enough to not conflict. All other field divisions were mentioned as either being clear of one another or of not being clear of one another in RfS X.4.a.ii.(a). If gyronny and per saltire are considered substantially different enough to be clear when they share two lines of partition, then per saltire and per pall should be different enough to be clear as they share less than half of each of two lines of partition.

While per pall is not an overwhelmingly common line of division, there are several examples in Siebmacher that suggest that per pall lines of division were their own lines of division and not artistic variants. Prior to 1605:

  • von Haldermannstetten arms – Per pall argent, Or and azure
  • die Ungerad – Per pall inverted argent, azure and gules, three candlesnuffers conjoined in pall Or
  • Priesen – Per pall argent, sable and gules

While in July 2004, Laurel created a precedent declaring Per saltire sable and azure clear of Per pall arrondi sable, azure and argent, the decision was based on counting CDs (number of pieces and style of line of division) and did not address the basic issue at hand in this appeal.

A letter of permission to conflict with Gwenlian Catharne (registered in July 2004): Per saltire sable and azure, accompanied the submitter's original submission of this device.



6. Conal MacLaren Wyewood Device – New

Per chevron sable and argent, a spider inverted argent and a three headed thistle proper.

The submitter's name was registered in the May 2002 LoAR.



7. Druim Doineann, Shire of   Badge – New

Per chevron throughout sable & vert, one laurel wreath argent.

The shire name was registered in 1997.



8. Eisenmarche, Shire of   Badge – Resubmission

(Fieldless) on a tower sable two mullets palewise Or.

The shire's name was registered in March 1986.

The previous submission, (fieldless) on a tower sable a mullet Or, was returned in June 2005 by Lions Blood for conflict with Harailt MacDonald, (fieldless) on a tower sable a feather bendwise sinister Or, with one CD for the fieldlessness, but no CD for the change of type only of the tertiary charge, as the tower was too complicated to void and thus not entitled to the treatment under RfS X.4.j.ii, and the rotation of the feather is not worth difference against a mullet.

This redesign addresses that difficulty.



9. Gareth Bythewere Myrgan Wood Device – Resubmission

Sable, a chevron between three fleur-de-lis in chief and a sea-python erect winged sinister Or

The submitter's name was registered in the July 2005 LoAR.

The prior submission, Sable a chevron between three fleur-s-de-lis and a python erect contourny Or, was returned in March 2005 because the fleurs-de-lis, as drawn, were neither in fess or in chevron, which raised potential conflicts if the fleurs-de-lis were in chevron. This redraw addresses those issues.



10. Hakon Einarsson Avacal Name & Device – New

Per chevron sable and azure, two axes and a horse passant argent

The submitter will accept any change necessary to register his name. He expresses no preference if changes are required. He wants a male name, and is interested in a name authentic for the "Norse" time period. He will allow a holding name.

Hakon is found in Geirr Bassi, The Old Norse Name, p. 11, in the form Hákon.

Einarr is found in Geirr Bassi, p. 9, in the form Einarr. The patronymic form is formed in accordance with the rules on page 17 of Geirr Bassi, for names ending in double r (drop one –r, add –s- plus son).



11. Harald Warwicker Wyewood Badge – New

Or, a seahorse Gules maintaining two whistling arrows vert

The submitter's name was registered in the January 2005 LoAR.

The prior submission, (fieldless) three birch leaves conjoined in pall vert, was returned by Lions Blood during 2004. The basis for that return was conflict with the armory of Ælfwyn Webbestre, Bendy sinister azure and argent, three leave conjoined in pall vert, with only one CD for the removal of the field. This redesign addresses that issue.

The submitter provided pictures of a "Mongolian Whistling Arrow point" from the 13th century. If I interpret the information on the form correctly, this picture may be viewed at http://anthromuseum.missouri.edu/grayson/grayson.html which should bring the viewer to a database entry, and if the item number MAC1998-0176 is entered, the Mongolian Whistling Arrow point should be retrieved.

13. Katerine von Altenstein Dragon's Laire Name & Device – New

Or, a chief sable a raven sable close proper to dexter, three rings or.

In the full colour emblazon, the field is Or, the bird sable, the chief sable, the rings Or, but the gemstones argent.

The submitter will not accept changes to her name. But if changes are required, she is more interested in an unspecified language or culture. She wants a female name, and is interested in a name authentic for the 14th century time period. She will allow creation of a holding name.

Katerina is found at http://www.s-gabriel.org/ names/talan/bahlow/bahlowFem.html where, under Katherine, the form Katerina has one example from 1350.

von is intended to mean "of" or "from."

Altenstein is documented from two websites. The first, http://www.geschichte-wak.de/altenstein.htm, is provided only in German. The second, http://www.thueringen.de/schloesser/englisch/ 105_en.htm , (Note: this link is not working nor is the German-language link) is in English and indicates a fortress was build on Mount Altenstein in the sixth century, and it became the ancestral seat of the vom Stein family. It became the center of legal administration after Landgrave Frederic the Serious purchased the castle in 1346.



14. Shunzei no Chikakawa Myrgan Wood Name and Device – Resubmission

Or, in pale three sexfoils Purpure seeded Or each within an annulet Purpure.

The prior submission, Chikakukawa No Shunzei, was returned in kingdom in March 2005, for lack of documentation of the construction of Chikakukawa in a period manner in Japanese. The College was able to document Chika and –kawa as themes used in Japanese name construction, but not the –ku-. In addition, there was concern about the order of the names in the submitted form. The device was returned for lack of a name under which to forward it to Laurel.

The submitter will accept any changes necessary to register her name. If changes are required, she is more interested in the meaning, which she indicates is "Chikakawa – by the river". She does not care about the gender of the name, but wants the name authentic for an unspecified language or culture. She will allow a holding name to be formed.

Shunkei is found in O'Neill, Japaneses Names: A Comprehensive Index by Characters and Readings, sub Shunkei.

Chikakawa is a constructed name. Both elements are found in O'Neill. Chika- is found on page 7, as a separate element, and in the names Chikada, Chikaki, Chikamatsu, Chikami, Chikaoka, Chikaraishi, Chikatsu, Chikayama, Chikazaka, and Chikazawa. –kawa is found in the name Kamikawa, and in Kamimikawa on page 46 of O'Neill.

The use of no in the middle of the name is documented from Bryant, "A Japanese Miscellany," Compleat Anachronist no. 65, p. 12, where the text indicates "During the Heian and Kamakura Periods, the name of the aristocracy would be rendered as Surname no Given name. The no is analogous to the German "von" or the French "de."



15. Tangwystl verch Glyn ap Daffydd Seagirt Name – Resubmission to Laurel

If this name is registered, the holding name Tangwystl of Seagirt (created May 2005 LoAR) will be replaced by this name.

The submitter will not accept major changes, but if changes are required, she cares more about the language and culture. She wants a female name, and is interested in a name authentic for the "Welsh" language and culture. The submitter's prior submission, Tangwystl verch Glyn, was returned in May 2005 for an aural conflict with the previously registered Tangwystl verch Gwyn.

No documentation was submitted in support of this new submission.
