Greetings from Black Lion

[who is also the Keeper of the Roll of Arms]

Seal of Black Lion Principal Herald

First, there will be a heralds' meeting on Sunday morning at 12th Night. Please check the schedule for exact place and time.

Now, I have an announcement regarding the An Tir online Roll of Arms: We now have over 1500 items on the roll!!!

I estimate that I have about 60 or so to go before we are what I can call up to date. [ed. note: that number is actually quite lower now, as this information was first posted on 11 December.]

At that point I will have added every known An Tir device. There is a caveat of course, since when we were a principality of the West arms registered during that time are marked as West. I've managed to get quite a few of those by comparing the peerage lists to the O and A.

I've had some help along the way, and to those that have helped make this happen, you are appreciated. I get mail and comments regularly about how useful the roll is to them.

The An Tir Kingdom Roll of Arms is online at http://badger.cx/heraldry/roll and has a link also off the kingdom heraldry page.

Greetings from Francesca Testarossa dei Martini

Arms of Francesca Testarossa dei Martini

Greetings unto the ladies and gentlemen of the An Tir College of Heralds from Francesca Testarossa dei Martini,Æstel-in-waiting!

Come share your skill, knowledge, heraldic imagination and enthusiasm at the consult table! The schedule is not terribly firm, especially as to shut-down time on Saturday. Suffice to say, we need to make sure everyone gets a chance to eat and to enjoy the event.

I am driving up Saturday morning, so I don't propose to open the consult table before 10:00. If someone will be there earlier and wants to open up the table, my blessings upon you! Please do let me know ASAP, tho, so I may notify the autocrat. I'm thinking about closing the table between 4:00 and 5:00 on Saturday, or whenever makes sense once we know the schedule for dinner break and for court.

I will need someone to be with the books at all times. I have to be in court sometime, but don't yet know when. If it turns out to be while the table is open for business, I will very much need someone to take care of the books.

Sunday morning we have a meeting with Black Lion. I am guessing that we will be able to open the consult table between 10 and 10:30 Sunday morning. I want to tear down no later than 2:00, earlier if we have no custom.

I welcome suggestions from those with experience of consult at a hotel event.

If you plan to work the table, would you kindly drop me a line? Let me know what books you are bringing, too. If I don't need to haul the entire Æstel library, that will be a kindness.

Yours in service,
Signora Francesca Testarossa dei Martini

Greetings from Dexter Gauntlet

A new year and a new OP! We've achieved a lot in the last 12 months. A new database, a new site, a new system of handling the volume of entries, a new Dexter Gauntlet. But what does this all mean to the An Tir College of Heralds? It means we have a stronger and better tool at our disposal.

We're now sitting on what is a very well organized and very good store house of information. This storehouse can be asked a great many questions and we can get answers from it. Should you have need to know how many peers were elevated in the last 5 years, the Dexter Gauntlet office can tell you. If you'd like to know the average length of time a person goes between getting an Award of Arms and a Grant level award, we can tell you that, too.

Feel free to contact me at op@antir.sca.org if you run into the need for any unusual questions like this. And please, keep sending in the updates!

Test Your Awards Knowledge

The answers to this short quiz appear further down the page. Try without peeking first, just to see what you know.

  1. Who went the longest period of time between receiving an Award of Arms and a Goutte de Sang?
  2. Who went the longest period of time between receiving an Award of Arms and a Jambe de Lion?
  3. Which Pelican of An Tir went the longest period of time between receiving an Award of Arms and being inducted into that order?
  4. Who is the premiere of the Order of the Goutte de Sang?
  5. Who is the premiere of the Order of the Jambe de Lion?

Greetings from Teceangl Ounce

As Lions Blood I was once asked why armory releases appear on the Internal Letter. My reasoning was that I'd really like the College commenters to make sure the armory is blazoned as appears on the letter of release, was registered when the letter of release says it was, and belongs to the person or people who have submitted the letter of release. This way we don't try to accidentally release Teceangl's sable mascle badge (I don't have one) or a single person doesn't end up releasing jointly owned armory (one of two people in joint ownership may release their interest and the badge or household name then belongs wholly to the other party, but it takes both owners to release it from registration). The commenters are valuable as proofreaders of submissions information, which is then cleaned up as per commentary and sent to the College of Arms. Because of An Tir's excellent and thorough commenters, I will proudly say we have one of the better Letters of Intent in the SCA when it comes to lack of misspellings and completeness of information. (Personal opinion, mind you, but I do see all of the others.) So please, commenters, keep up the good work and remember that you need not be an armory or names whiz to check to make sure something really is/was registered and spelled right.

Teceangl Bach

And the Answers Are...

  1. Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland received an Award of Arms on October 18, AS X (1975) and a Goutte de Sang on November 22, AS XXXVIII (2003). That is 10,262 days - over 28 years - later.
  2. Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland is again the answer. He received an Award of Arms on October, 18, AS X (1975) and a Jambe de Lion on November 22, AS XXXVIII (2003) - the same day he received a Goutte de Sang, over 28 years later.
  3. Aaron of the Black Mountains received his Award of Arms on August 29, AS XVI (1981) and was inducted in the Order of the Pelican on March, 2, AS XXXVI (2002), over 20 and a half years later.
  4. Edrik ap Pengam of Lions Gate was the first to receive a Goutte de Sang on September, 4 AS XV (1980). It is the highest precedence award he ever received.
  5. Moira ni Tabor of Clare of Three Mountains was the first to receive that honor on January 16, AS XVI (1982). Like the premiere of the Goutte de Sang, it is the highest precedence award she ever received as well.

A Missive From Free Trumpet Press West

Greetings to heralds & pursuivants, one and all,
I have several important announcements concerning Free Trumpet Press West.

First, for those who have ordered lately and are waiting for their items, my deepest apologies to you all. Hard drive crashes (wiping out my inventory, shipping, and other records) combined with some unfortunate problems in the mundane world have slowed me more that I wish. Those orders will be processed as soon as I can.

Second, FTPW is proud to announce the arrival of updates to the Ordinary and Armorial:

Both books are now back from the printers and are available for $7.00 each (including postage, tax, etc.).

Finally, as of the end of this year, Free Trumpet Press West will be moving further west... and merging with the SCA, Inc. Marketplace. They will be handling all orders after the beginning of 2004. There should be more details coming from the California office & the Laurel King of Arms about this merger. This combining of the offices has been in the works for over a year, and I'm very glad to see it finally pushed through.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at klconlin@ilstu.edu.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Rory mac Feidhlimidh
Curator, Free Trumpet Press West

The February Lions Blood meeting will be held on Sunday, February 15th at 1pm in the Portland/Three Mountains area.

Arms of Marya Lions Blood

Greetings from Lions Blood.

Remember, Lions Blood meetings are open to all interested parties, not just heralds. They are a good way for the populace to see what happens to submissions and to help them understand the reasoning behind the heraldic decision making process. Therefore, meeting information may be shared with those you think might be interested.

RESULTS OF THE NOVEMBER LIONS BLOOD MEETING:

The following people were present at the November Lions Blood meeting or sent commentary: Marya Lions Blood, Meadhbha Dragon's Mist, Earc Mountain Edge, Teceangl Ounce, Ciaran Goutte de Sang, Ninian Red Trident, Roswitha, Jessimond of Greencrosse, Rognvaldr Hersir, Isrið Meistara, Elisabeth Pomegranate, David Electrum, Natasha vox Leonis, Gwenlian Catharne, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Li Ban Tir Righ, Tadgg h-úa Faelan of Clan MacNessa, Çinara beguy Urdina, Wade of Many Places, and Knut.

The following names and armory have been sent to Laurel (November LoI) --

Aine Paixdecoeur Name and Device, New
Or, a sperm whale naiant bendwise contourny sable between two bendlets wavy between two roses vert seeded or.
Alastair Kirkpatrick Name and Device, New
Azure estencelly argent, a wolf rampant Or.

Originally submitted as Alastar Kirckpatrick, both name elements have been changed to reflect the documented Scots spellings and to meet the submitter's request for authenticity of language.

We believe this device to be clear of Ana Moonstar - August of 1979: Azure, a wolf rampant reguardant Or, maintaining in its teeth a mullet of eight points argent, standing upon a moon in her plentitude per pale argent and sable, as the moon is likely large enough to count as co-primary, but a visual check to confirm that may be necessary.

Berik of Sugdak Name and Device, New
Per pale sable and gules, a pale embattled counter-embattled between two bear's pawprints Or.
Bran mac Conchobair Device, Resubmission
Argent, a bend sinister cotised azure between two ravens sable.
Danescombe, Shire of Device, New
Per chevron argent and Or, a yale rampant contourny and in base a laurel wreath gules.
Durante Ramberti Name and Device, New
Purpure, a phoenix and in chief a chalice all within a bordure rayonny argent.

Submitted as Durant Ramberti Caiaphas, the submitter's documentation for Caiaphas, and the total of what the CoH were able to locate, all indicated that the name belonged to a single Biblical figure before the time of Christ. As this name element could not be found to be combinable with an otherwise post 1300 Italian name, the element was dropped at kingdom. The forename spelling was also changed to match the documented spelling of Durante.

Geoffrey MacLean Name, New

Giovanna Vernaccia Name, New

Grímr Magnússon Name and Device, New
Azure, a bear sejant and on a chief embattled argent, three flames gules.
Jebe of Sugdak Name and Device, New
Or, a cross of Calatrava gules within an orle of lozenges points to center sable.
Kateline MacFarlane Badge, Release
(Fieldless) A throne argent, seat and back cushioned azure, thereon a skull argent.
Madrun verch Trahaearn Name and Device, New
Or, a dance vert overall an urchin rampant gules.
Marguerite de Moseleia Device, New
Or, a lion gules maintaining a sheaf of arrows and on a chief sable three crosses couped Or.
Mikael Drakelawe Device, New
Argent, a bend engrailed gules overall a dragon segreant all within a bordure sable.
Morgaine Somerset Device, New
Gules, on a chevron sable fimbriated three crosses of St. Brigid argent.

We note Klaus von Mainz (2001): Checky gules and Or, on a chevron sable five crosses formy argent. This should be clear with one CD for changing the field and another for changes to both type and number of the crosses. However Electrum rightfully states that a cross of St. Brigid is an SCA allowed charge not seen in period heraldry, so we request that Laurel/Wreath rule specifically whether there is significant difference between a cross formy and a cross of St. Brigid.

Mughain Brecc inghean Dhonnghaile Name, New

Muireann O'Muirnea_áin
(the letter where the underscore is here is a c with a dot on top)
Name, New

Rand Hawkyns Device, Change
Checky sable and argent, on a pile azure a chess rook argent.
Raphaella di Contini Name and Device, New
Argent, a sheaf of peacock feathers proper and on a chief sable two rapiers in saltire proper.
Stromgard, Barony of Badge, New
(Fieldless) A trident gules.
Stromgard, Barony of Badge, New
(Fieldless) A seahorse gules charged on the shoulder with an escutcheon argent.
Stromgard, Barony of Badge, New
(Fieldless) A horseshoe inverted argent.

We note Arnora Dunestan (1991): (Fieldless) A horseshoe inverted argent entwined by a riband, ends pendant in base, charged between the heels with a rose gules. The blazon indicates that the rose is a significant charge, much like a charge between the attires of a massacre; therefore we believe that there is no conflict. We have requested a visual check in order to be certain.

Stromgard, Barony of, for Órd Seamair Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) A quatrefoil saltirewise slipped Or.
Stromgard, Barony of, for Order of the Bell and Chain Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) A chain in chevron inverted conjoined in pale with a hawk's bell Or.

We believe this badge to be clear of Meridies, Kingdom of (1980): Vair ancient, a hawk's bell Or, as the chain is significantly large enough to be a co-primary charge.

Stromgard, Barony of, for Order of the Silver Sea Urchin Order Name, New

Stromgard, Barony of, for Order of the Silver Seastar Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) An estoile fesswise within and conjoined to an annulet engrailed on the inner edge argent.
Stromgard, Barony of, for Ordo Musarum Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) A gem ring argent gemmed gules.
Stromgard, Barony of, for Ordo Primarius Famularis Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) A roundel between and sustained in fess by two hands argent.
Stromgard, Barony of, for Ordo Primarius Hippocampus Order Name and Badge, New
(Fieldless) A seahorse within and conjoined to an annulet engrailed on the inner edge argent.
Stromgard, Barony of, for Red Trident Pursuivant Heraldic Title, New

Titus Antonius Archelaus Badge, Release
Gules, in pale a skull and a throne argent cushioned azure within a bordure argent.

The following were returned for further work:

Geoffrey MacLean Device, New

Vert, on a bend sinister embattled argent, a bendlet sinister sable.

The extremely thin line of argent flanking the very wide sable scarp created the appearance of a bend sinister sable fimbriated embattled argent. As complex-line fimbriation on e plain-line ordinary is not allowable, this device had to be returned for redrawing. Additionally, there were far too many and too small embattlements to be clearly depicted. On a long ordinary such as a bend or bend sinister, five to seven repetitions of embattling is optimum and no more than eight should be used.

Marie Chantes Device, New

Per fess engrailed gules and sable, three roses in bend sinister Or barbed vert seeded gules.

Complex lines between tinctures of the same class (in this case colors) may no be overlain by any charge wide than the blade of a sword, as it obscures the line of division. Additionally, there were too many engrailings and they were too irregular to be clearly identifiable as an engrailed line of division. On a per fess line no more than seven repeats of the complex treatment should be used. This device was returned for redrawing.

Stromgard, Barony of, for Order of the Silver Sea Urchin Order Name, New

(Fieldless) A sea urchin contourny argent.

This badge conflicted with Atlantia. Kingdom of - May of 199 (sic) (via Atlantia): (Fieldless) A sea urchin argent.
