FROM LIONS BLOOD HERALD
NEW! There should be wide enough margins on the
printed IL to facilitate punching for filing in binders.
This month's magic number is three. Per the Administrative Handbook,
section IV. C. Completed Paperwork - No submission, including any resubmission,
appeal, change or release of a protected item, etc., shall be considered
to have occurred until a complete set of paperwork is provided to the appropriate
heraldic officer. The numbers of sets of paperwork and the detailed format
of the forms are governed by kingdom policy. However, completed paperwork
must include all of the following materials which are relevant to the submission
in question.
Lions Blood has been so nice about such things in the past that she has a
too-large stack of pending files. Therefore, beginning with the July
IL, if a submission packet is incomplete it will be returned. Period.
Please work with your clients to assure that there is three of everything
(forms, docs, petitions, notes, everything but the envelope and check) in
every submission.
LINE DRAWINGS:
The other major problem is line drawings, lack thereof. Right beneath
"AN TIR COLLEGE OF HERALDS" on every armory form are the instructions to
"send three colored and three uncolored line drawing copies to Lions Blood
Herald". Get a lurid highlighter and go over that information, preferably
in some shade that leaves a nice after-image when viewed.
DO NOT ALTER THE FORMS!
Every checkbox, all the received/action/forwarded info sections at the bottom
of the form, every entry field, and a big blank space for the final blazon
are required on the submission forms. Please supply forms to your clients
and branch members to fill out. I know it's easy to just download them
and fill them out, but more and more forms are coming in with bits missing.
Again, I'll have to return things for this problem, so if local heralds can
help prevent people from reformatting the forms, there'll be fewer hard feelings.
For the most part, none of the above are any particular herald's problem
(most stem from submitters who haven't really worked with any herald), but
the more people we tell, the greater the chance someone might listen and
perhaps even tell others.
THANK YOU!
Lions Blood would like to specifically thank the Seagirt commenters for checking
name registration dates and catching plenty of Lions Blood errors in the
April IL. Care for details makes An Tir look very good to the CoA.
DRAFT PRECEDENTS LINKED TO MAIN PRECEDENTS PAGE:
Elsbeth's and Francois' draft precedents are now linked to the www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/precedents.html
page. Rumor has it also that downloadable versions of Bruce's precedents
are to be made available soon. More news when it's there to tell.
There's a chart to help track lingual mix weirdness in names registrations.
It' in the cover letter for the January 2002 LoAR and should be available
with the webbed draft names precedents for the current Laurel tenure quite
soon.
I cannot stress enough the importance of reading LoARs and cover letters
if you are a consulting herald on names or armory. The LoARs for January
and February are chock-full of more good information. If you're neither
internet connected nor able to subscribe to the paper LoAR ($25, so many
of us aren't), contact me. I might be able to help get you copies of
the cover letters.
Two LoARs came in this month. I've only received commentary from two
people on how they'd like to see An Tir LoAR information listed here.
Does anyone else have any opinions?

Vincent of Hawksheye. Name and device. Sable, in pale a wolf's

Or.
RETURNED:
Davin Steingrimsson. Name and device. Or, a ram's head couped contourny
sable armed argent and on a chief sable three coronets Or.
Davin is Anglicized Irish, Steingrimsson is Old Norse. As Scots and
Old Norse has been ruled unregisterable due to excessive temporal disparity,
Anglicized Irish and Old Norse have the same problem. The ram's head,
particularly the horns which were formed of disconnected segments, was unidentifiable
as drawn.
Davin Steingrimsson. Badge. Or, a ram's head couped contourny sable
armed argent and a bordure sable bezanty.
Same problem with the ram's head as with the device.
Gemma Meen. Device. Purpure, on a tower argent masoned a dog rampant
sable.
Conflict with Aelfric se Droflic, (Fieldless) On a tower argent an acorn
sable. One CD for adding a field. Towers are complex charges
and not eligible for X.4.j.ii.a. Masoning on a charge normally made
of stone or brick (such as a bridge or tower) is an artistic detail not worth
difference. Lions Blood argued (unsuccessfully) that the dog was at
the tower's base and should get a CD from the more centrally-positioned acorn,
but a visual comparison showed that both tertiary charges are large enough
to overlap the space they take up in the middle of the tower, so no CD for
changes to tertiary charges under X.4.j.i. exists.
Susanna Craven. Badge. (Fieldless) A dragon's head cabossed argent.
The dragon's head was drawn with a frill more reminiscent of a frilled lizard
than a dragon, rendering it unrecognizable. No period examples of dragons'
heads drawn in this manner were found.
Yolanda de Guelph. Name.
Guelph (Middle High German Welf) is a name associated exclusively with the
princely family who were the primary opponents of the Hohenstaufens for control
of the Holy Roman Empire and were the ancestors of inter alia the current
British royal family. Thus the name was returned for presumption per

Aster Peyton. Device. Or, a castle sable and in chief three pearled

sable.
Juliana de Saint Denys. Device. Quarterly argent and purpure, four
frets couped counterchanged.
Juliana de Saint Denys. Badge. (Fieldless) A triquetra purpure.
RETURNED:
Ælfric the Lost. Name.
While the English byname the Lost has been ruled SCA compatible, use of an
SCA compatible but undocumentable name element is a weirdness. AElfric
is Old English. Modern English and Old English are different languages;
mixing the two in the same name has been ruled registerable, though a weirdness.
Therefore, mixing Old English with English and using an SCA compatible byname
is two weirdnesses and two weirdnesses is not registerable.
An Tir, Kingdom of. Badge for Thrown Weapons Deputy. Per pale Or
and argent, an axe and a knife and on a chief sable a spear reversed Or.
As the Deputy for Thrown weapons is a position beneath an officer with a
badge at corporate level (the Marshalate), the office may not have an independent
badge. Additionally, since the use of a marshal's badge on the field
is immediate recognition, all marshals throughout the Society need to be
identical. Therefore, such may only be registered at the corporate
level.
Ealasaid inghean uí Domhnaill. Name.
Returned for conflict with Elzasaif O'Donnell. Elzasif is said to be
a Norse variant of Elizabeth; Ealasaid is a modern Scottish Gaelic variant
of Elizabeth. inghean uí means and sounds the same as O'.
Therefore these names are the same.
Results from the Letter of Correction dated 15 April 2002
(a Letter of Correction fixes mistakes in LoARs, the Armorial and the
Ordinary):
Úna inghen uí Gairbhíne. Name correction from
Úna inghen uá Gairbháne. The byname was misspelled
on the LoAR dated May 1998.
Ellen Lettice Fraser. Name correction from Ellen Lettice Frasier.
The name was misspelled on the LoAR dated October 2001.
(You see why I'm such a proponent of a long but thorough proofreading
process for the LoARs? Úna waited three years for this correction

[a dolmen vs a dolmen of three uprights capped by two lintels] This conflicts with ... a dolmen of three uprights capped by two lintels argent. [i.e. the difference is insignificant]. (David O Kellahan, 11/97 p. 15) In addition, an office which has a superior that has a badge at the corporate level may not have a badge registered to it. Or, a four-leaved clover saltirewise vert |

were not considered the same charge in period. This submission will
be on the April 2002 Letter of Intent. |
NEW SUBMISSIONS:
1. Adrianna the Fierce |
(Madrone) |
Badge, Resubmission to Kingdom |
(Fieldless) An Ermine statant reguardant contourney ermine.
|

previous badge, (Fieldless) An ermine statant ermine, was returned

Guggenheimer, Ktav Publishing House, Inc. 1992. Aelana appears to be a constructed variant spelling of Elan or llan found on p. 216 and Aelion found on p. 11. Aelion is a masculine Sephardic name found in Italy, and Elan is a Hebrew word meaning "tree". No dates are included in the reference, and the construction of the given name is not documented. Cordovera appears to be a variation on Cordovero , found on p. 170. Cordovero is a locative meaning "from Cordova". A Rabbi Moshe Cordovero is dated to the 16th C. Lion staff title. The submission indicates that "period heraldic titles were often derived from heraldic charges and badges: Lyon from the main charge of the arms of Scotland, Garter from the badge and Order (created in 1415), Portcullis and Unicorn in the English College and Lord Lyon's staff." The submitter requests, "If you can fix grammar to fit the Mongolian language style – please do. I would like the name to mean Rikku- who lives in the Kentei mountain range in Mongolia." |

The submitter's name was registered in December 2000.
The submitter's previous device, Gules, a cubit arm sustaining a bow fesswise
argent, was returned at the same time because "By Laurel precedent (see
the November 1994 LoAR, Cyril Bowman, pg. 12), the cubit arm/bow combination
is disallowed by rule RfS VII.7.a "Identification Requirement" as it not
sufficiently distinguishable from a crossbow. It is thus also in conflict
with Triaria de la Rivière - Gules, a crossbow between four thistles
in cross argent, with only a CD for the addition of secondary charges."

was returned from kingdom in May 2000 for conflict with John of Woodwose
Hall, Argent, a man's head couped affronty, crowned with leaves and antlers
all vert. The submitter's third device, Per bend Or and bendy
gules and Or, a mouthless demon's head affronty gules wearing an arming cap

Previously submitted name, Sweet Tamlin, was
withdrawn by the submitter in March. The submitter will accept changes to the name. If the name must be changed, he cares more about the meaning of the "last name" and the sound of the "first name". He believes the name means "son of Grim from Westrae". The submitter wants a masculine name authentic for 16th century Orkney, and he will allow the creation of a holding name. Tamlin is cited from Reaney and Wilson's A Dictionary of English Surnames, 3rdedition, p. 439 (sub "Tamlin") with the name Peter Tamelyn dated to 1327. The "surname is derived as a 'double diminutive of Tam (Tom).'" MacGrim is a patronymic constructed from multiple sources. "Grim" is cited from Geirr Bassi's The Old Norse Name p. 10. The submitter indicates that for a "Scots patronymic formed of Mac + <old Norse derived given name> see Macsagill (cited from Black's The Surnames of Scotland p. 454)". This reference contains the names Mac Askill and Mac Caskell as header spellings, and Mac Askill is dated to the 16th Century. The Norse name Askell is also found in Geirr Bassi, ibid, p. 8. Other examples cited include Mac Iver (Black, ibid, p. 520) as a derivative of Ivar, MacBirnie (Black, ibid, p. 458) as a derivative of Byorn, and Mac Harold (Black, ibid, p. 509) as a derivative of Haraldr, dated to 1502. No specific documentation is provided for na Westrae. |

24. Tressach mac Domnaill |
(Blatha An Oír) |
Device, Resubmission to Kingdom |
Per bend gules and sable, a bend wavy or and in sinister chief a dogwood
blossom argent.
|
||
The submitter's name appears on the February 2002 LoI.
The submitter's previous device, Per bend gules and sable a bend wavy Or
and in sinister chief a dogwood blossom argent, was returned in Kingdom in
February 2002 for artistic problems. According to Lion's blood "First
off, the miniature and line drawing emblazons did not match the full-sized
color emblazons. Lions Blood insists that there be no variations between
the renditions because the College of Heralds and the College of Arms only
see the line drawing miniature, the Lions Blood meeting attendees may see
all three, but Laurel meetings only see the full-color full size, so it is
imperative that they all match down to the smallest detail. Secondly,
the bend was too narrow and the dogwood blossom appeared to some as four
hearts in cross rather than a single charge. Because a complex field
division line cannot be covered by a charge, this is per bend rather than
per bend wavy, and therefore the bend needed to be wide enough to totally
cover the division line. It wasn't, particularly in the deeper waves."
All artistic problems have been resolved with this submission. No conflicts
were discovered on the previous submission. |
