To continue receiving the Internal Letter you must either subscribe (in which case your label shows the date of the last IL in your subscription) or comment regularly, which we hope will be monthly. If you don't comment for three months in a row I ought to remove you from the mailing list, but what you'll get is a nice note asking where you've gotten to, and then if I don't receive commentary the next month, you'll be removed from the mailing list. I understand about Attacks of Real Life, and sure do appreciate a "sorry, no can do this month" email. Speaking of which: Lion's Blood is looking for a drop-dead deputy (if I get hit by a bus Teceangl has threatened to kill me...) but seriously folks, as Lady Maryn's drop-dead I am filling out her warrant time (until May Crown), if my work stays steady I plan to reapply for a year, but it's not too early to express interest in the position. From the North: Take I-5 south to Oregon exit 306-B and follow the signs for Marine Dr. westbound. Once on Marine Dr., stay in the left lane for about 0.9 mi to the train overpass. Immediately following the overpass turn left onto N. Portland Rd., again staying in the left lane when there is one. At the end of the road turn right and immediately right again. The device should be clear of both Abel Parnell le Guide, Per bend pean and erminois, and Guillaume de Blumont, Per bend sinister erminois and pean. Under RfS X.4.a.ii(a), per bend and gyronny are substantially different from each other, and therefore, these three primary armories are clear of each other.

Her name is submitted above. There were some concerns expressed at Kingdom regarding excessive counterchanging.

We find this clear of Barony of the Flaming Gryphon by RFS V.2.a.ii. Change of Order or Grammar. The construction is [creature]+[attribute] which is a common SCA Order Name construction. Precedent for registration of such a formation can be found in such registrations as Lion's Blood Herald. J

We tried to help as best we could with the name documentation and made an argument for lingua franca construction as well as other [animal]+[geographic feature] constructions. We did a little blazon fu from: Per pall inverted azure, argent and vert, in chief two laurel wreaths argent and azure.
5. Catriona Stiubhard, Device Resubmission to Laurel
Per pale embowed counterembowed argent and sable, two natural dolphins naiant in annulo counterchanged
Her name was registered in April 1997. Her device was returned from Laurel in April 1998 with a request for redraw which was done. We retained the blazon as given by Laurel.
6. DaimhÌn Û Ruaidh, Name and Device New

DaimhÌn himself found a last minute spelling error, and we fixed it with his blessing and sent it up. Although we reblazoned the primary charge as a "castle", the submitter would prefer the use of "bailey" for canting purposes.
7. Draga Drevo, Device Resubmission to Laurel
Vert a hurst of three trees blasted and eradicated on a bordure argent a vine of ivy vert
Her name was registered on the LoAR of 5/98. This is a redraw of the bordure and its ivy vine as requested. We changed the blazon to read "vine" rather than "orle" of ivy.

We added additional documentation for "Trowbridge" out of Ekwall and sent this up.
9. Fionn Ua NÈill, Name and Device New

We changed "Ui" to "Ua" and added to the name dox. We are suggesting that the pawn be drawn a bit larger in the future.

Her name was registered in 1996. We worked a little blazon fu on the rose as Kendal flowers are no longer acceptable charges. This was returned previously for too many rayons on the border which was corrected.

The client will accept unspecified changes, and will accept 'John the Just' if <Just John> is not acceptable. <Just> is found as a header spelling on p. 258 of Reaney and Wilson, 3rd ed. and is dated "Gilebertus filius Juste 1203". In the same book, p. 256 sub "John" is found "Thomas John 1279".
14. Madhu Brahman, Name New
We quoted liberally from her documentation and added some new dox were found but Indian names aren't anyone's particular specialty.

Per the submitter's request we have withdrawn the submission for a redraw of the coronet as consensus of the group was that the coronet as drawn was not a default SCA coronet. (see New Submissions for the redraw)

We were unable to document <Miothophoros> and asked for further documentation.
Just John, Device
Purpure, a fish haurient maintaining in its mouth a balance Or and on a chief azure three mullets of five Or
The proposed device violates the "Rule of Tincture" by having a blue chief laying on a purple field. In Society heraldry there must be good contrast between elements on a device (RfS VIII.2). This was returned for further work.
Madhu Brahman, Device
Per chevron inverted indented Or honeycombed sable and sable, a goutte and a base Or
The device is being returned for redrawing and has a number of difficulties. Laurel has ruled "the non-medieval field treatment of honeycombing to be a weirdness" [LoAR, June 1999, Elsbeth, p. 1]. Devices and badges may have one but not two or more weirdnesses in them. The proposed device has a total of three weirdnesses in the honeycombing, the shallowly drawn base, and the per chevron inverted/indented division that ends in a horizontal line. Some commenters thought the design bordered on pictorial.

The badge was returned for conflict with Iulstan Sigewealding (West, 7/91) "(Fieldless) A goutte d'Or". There is only one CD with the addition of the sable (black) field. Also, remind your submitters that badge submissions must be submitted on a round field (in a round shape for a fielded badge) regardless of how they eventually display the badge. Thx.

The Barony will accept unspecified changes and care most about the meaning, which is intended to mean "Order of the Golden Herm". The form includes an authorization statement signed by Baroness Isabeau du Lis Noire. The form documentation reads, "This proposed order name is based on the Model of the Order of the Golden Fleece, GOLDEN plus NOUN."
2. Brian O Duinn (Blatha an Oir) Name New
Submitter will accept unspecified changes and wants a masculine name appropriate for mid-1400s Ireland. His documentation is from O Corrain and Maguire citing p. 35 for <Brian> as a header spelling and Woulfe's Irish Names and Surnames p. 517 for <O Duinn> quoting "this is a Gaelic form usually anglicized as Dunn, Dun, Doyne, etc.".
3. David of Moffat (Glymm Mere) Badge Resub/Kingdom
(Fieldless) a demi-lion rampant erased argent gorged of a coronet azure and maintaining an escutcheon gules
His name was registered in 1981. Submitter is entitled to a coronet by virtue of being a Court Baron (5 May 1998) in An Tir. This emblazon uses the 4 pointed (3 showing) default SCA crown/coronet. Like my illustrious predecessor, I am going to quote the accompanying statement in toto:
"In addition to the points raised in the letter accompanying my initial submission of this badge, please consider the following points with regards to the issue of whether there is a blazonable difference between this badge and my mundane crest.
'As noted on the cover letter of December 2, 1984, and the LoAR of December 15, 1985, 'There is no 'standard' viscomital coronet, either as a physical entity or an heraldic convention'. Viscounts and Viscountesses may use the default heraldic coronet (a crown indented of three points) if they so choose.' (LoAR 11/91 p.20)
Coronet: A small crown, or a crown borne by those who are not sovereigns; but generally synonymous with Crown, q.v. (Parker, A Glossary of Terms used in Heraldry, p. 136).
Crown: this word occurring in blazon without any addition usually implies a ducal coronet without the cap. [...]
A coronet without the cap, and shewing but three leaves, is call a Ducal coronet, and frequently a Ducal crown. (Parker, pp. 181 & 187)
Therefore, since the coronet found in this submission is the default coronet for SCA heraldic purposes, and different from the coronet of four fleurs-de-lis (one and two halves visible) of my mundane crest, this should be a blazonable difference, especially given that the blazon submitted here (gorged of a coronet), if drawn in the mundane world, would result in a lion gorged of a ducal coronet, and not a lion gorged of a coronet of three points, as submitted here; or a coronet of four fleurs-de-lis (one and two halves visible), as matriculated in Scotland.
As to the question of whether the erased nature is of significance, it is generally conceded in SCA heraldry that erasing verse couping is of no significance. However, it is generally blazoned if not the default. I have searched my heraldic sources, and have come across no definition which would indicate that the default for a demi-beast is either couped or erased in the mundane world. However, I also noted that all drawings of demi-beasts that I noted were drawn couped, rather than erased. Further, since the torse under my crest is not part of the crest, but only covers the joint between the crest and the helm, it must be presumed that the demi-lion in the crest is couped rather than erased. Therefore, since the demi-lion in the crest appears to be in the default couped condition, while this badge under submission is expressly in the erased condition, this alteration also constitutes a blazonable difference between the two pieces of armory."
4. Deicyn Moel (Vingaard) Name and Device New
Or, three Scottish pines proper, and on a chief gules, a spoon fesswise, bowl to dexter, Or.
Submitter declines to accept major changes and wants a masculine name appropriate for Wales. His documentation cites Morgan & Morgan Welsh Surnames; p. 84, first column, "Examples of Deicyn, Dackyn, etc." with the exact nameform <Deicyn Powys>, and in the same source, p. 167, top line of second column for the name <Gwladus Moel>.
5. Duncan O Duinn (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New
Vert on a bend sinister sable fimbriated Or an anchor argent
Submitter wishes a masculine name authentic for 1400s Ireland and will accept unspecified changes. He cites Black's The Surnames of Scotland p. 228 listing <Duncan> as an anglicized form of the Gaelic Donnchad. <O Duinn> is from Woulfe's Irish Names and Surnames p. 517 as a Gaelic form usually anglicized as Dunn, Dun, Doyne, etc.
6. Ellen Fraser (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New
Quarterly vert and azure upon a rondel Or a butterfly (Scotch Argus, Erebia aethiops) displayed gules
Submitter will accept unspecified changes and wishes a late 15th century English feminine name. Her citation for <Ellen> is Withycombe p. 101, and for <Fraser> she lists Black, p. 278 (sub Fraser). She includes a letter of permission to conflict from Randall d'Artinual who bears Quarterly vert and azure, on a bezant a Cross of Jerusalem gules. They are brother and sister and wish to reflect this in their armory. There is no internal detailing on the butterfly in the full-size emblazons.
7. EÛbhann MacLabhruinn of Balquhidder (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device Resub/Kingdom
Argent a bordure purpure a three headed thistle proper
His previous submission of the name <Ewan MacLaren> was returned at kingdom in 1995 for conflict with <Eoin MacLaren>; the return letter also states that the Gaelic form < EÛbhann MacLabhruinn> is an aural conflict and suggests the addition of the locative <Balquhidder> for difference. The current resubmission states that he will accept unspecified changes and wants a masculine name appropriate for late 16th century Scotland. His documentation is from Robert Bain's The Clans and Tartans of Scotland listing "Personal names in English and Gaelic" under the heading <Ewen> and variants < EÛbhann> and <Eoghan>. From the same source is included a page citing <MacLaren> and its Gaelic form <MacLabhruinn>. It also states, "The MacLarens are also recorded as having been in possession of lands in Balquhidder and Strathhearn in the 12th century." The return letter from Dame Zenobia mentions that Balquhidder is not the seat, nor current mundane territory, of the mundane Clan MacLaren. The device was returned for having a bordure compony of vert and purpure. This bordure is tinctured solid purpure.
8. Emma inn Draumspaki (Dragon's Mist) Name New
Submitter will accept minor changes and wishes a Norse feminine name meaning "Emma the Dreamspeaker". Documentation is from Geirr-Bassi The Old Norse Name citing p. 9 for <Emma> and p. 20 for <Draumspaki>, meaning "dream speaker".
9. Gareth of Eastbrook (Blatha an Oir) Device Resub/Kingdom
Azure upon a chevron Or three trefoils vert all between three Irish harps Or
His name was registered in March of 1986. His previous device submission of Azure, on a chevron Or three trefoils vert, in chief two harps Or, in base a sword argent hilted and pommeled Or was returned for conflict with Hieronyma Holovoet van Dadizele's Azure on a chevron Or three crosses couped vert with one CD for addition of secondary charge group, but as Gareth's device doesn't qualify as simple armory under X.4.j.ii. there can be nothing for type only change of tertiaries.
10. Gavin MacKinley (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New
Per pale gules and argent two wolves sejant ululant tails erect addorsed and counterchanged
He will accept unspecified changes and wishes to retain the sound of the name. He's looking for a masculine name acceptable for late 16th century Scotland. <Gavin> is cited from Withycombe, p. 127, dated 1604 with the related spelling Gavinus dated 633. <Gavin> is also cited as a header spelling in Black's Surnames of Scotland on p. 292. <MacKinley> is also cited from Black on p. 530 as a header spelling.
11. GeneviËve de Clairvaux les Lacs (Appledore) Name and Device New
Sable, on a bend sinister argent, 3 decrescents azure between a lion rampant turned to sinister and a fleur-de-lis Or
Submitter will accept unspecified changes and wishes a feminine name appropriate for 1500-1600 France. She cites Hanks & Hodges saying, "GeneviÈve is the patron saint of Paris." She also included a page from The Lady and the Unicorn by Alain Erlande-Brandenburg naming GeneviËve de Nanterre as the wife of Jean Le Viste, deceased in 1500. For Clairvaux les-Lacs there is a copy of a modern map showing the placename on a town northeast of Lyon.
12. Julina de Beaumont (Julina Dunn) Name and Device New

She will accept unspecified changes and wishes a feminine name appropriate to early 15th century England and also wishes to retain the sound of the name. The submission form states that <Julina> is the submitter's legal name, but no proof is enclosed. <de Beaumont> is cited from Reaney & Wilson p. 35 under the header "Beaumont".
13. Kareema bint Yusuf (Blatha an Oir) Name New
Submitter will accept unspecified changes and presumably wants a feminine Islamic name (language/culture is marked but is not specified). She cites "Kareema: karima - Schmillel, Islamic Names" and "Yusuf - Fihrist of al-Nadim p. 1129 and Islamic World, Compleat Anachronist #51 p 41". No copies were included.
14. Kateryn Atte Crouche (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New

She will accept changes and is looking for a feminine name retaining the sound and appropriate for early-mid 16th century Yorkshire. She lists "Kateryn - pg 187 Withycombe" and "Atte Crouche - Reaney and Wilson 118 s.n. Crouch" as documentation.
15. Kenric inn Kyrri (Coeur du Val) Name and Device New

He declines to accept major changes and wishes a masculine name appropriate for the 10-12th centuries. <Kenric> is cited from Withycombe p. 188 as a variant of Kenrick, dated 1086 in the Domesday Book. <inn Kyrri> is stated to be found on p. 25 of Geirr Bassi's The Old Norse Name as a nickname meaning "the quiet, gentle".

Her documentation is from Geirr-Bassi's The Old Norse Name citing <KirstÌn> on p. 13 under the header "Krakr", and <inn Tasaldi> on p. 29 as an adjectival nickname for "chatter". The construction section on p. 18 calls for the feminization to "in".

Submitter will accept changes and wants a masculine name appropriate for a 13th century German Jew. He has included much documentation although no title page copies are included. The submitter has written citations on each page [but we really like title pages copies]. The name is intended to mean "Matthew from [city in Judea]." We could use some help sifting through this as the real issue is what language should the name be in -- Hebrew, German, or Latin? The submitter has justified pieces of all three. His documentation consists of copies from Withycombe listing the entry for "Matthew" which includes the Hebrew spelling <Mattathiah>, and <Mattheus> from the Domesday Book dated 1086, Holly Ingraham's People's Names (date given as 1953, published by McFarland and Company, USA) which has an entry for "Mattithyah - Matthew; given by Yahu", and Essenbersen, David Encyclopedia of Battles p. 210 listing the name <Mattathias> as a revolt leader of the Maccabees in 168-165 BC. There is also a copy of a map page from Rogerson, John Atlas of the Bible Facts on File, NY, showing the modern city of Modin (with alternate spelling listed as Modein). On p. 37 of the same book is the text "Antichus' act provoked the Maccabean revolt, initiated by the Mattathias of Modein and carried out by his sons Judas (167-160 [BCE]." The submitter's cover letter discusses name construction but no supporting documentation is included. Please remind your submitters that persona stories only confuse Lion's Blood and don't really help justify the name submission.
21. Melisant de Alemayne (Vingaard) Name and Device New

Submitter will accept minor changes and wishes a name for a 14th century Norman lady which means "Melisant from Germany". Her documentation cites Withycombe which lists <Melisant> on p. 220 under "Millicent" and dated to 1213. For <de Alemayne> she cites Reaney & Wilson p. 6 under the header "Allman" listing one "Thomas de Alemayne (1320)".
22. Natalie de Caen (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New

Submitter wishes a name retaining the sound and appropriate for a 15th century Irishwoman; she will accept unspecified changes. Her documentation states that Natalie is her legal name. It also says, "De Caen - from Caen. Same as her lord's registered surname name, Sebastian de Caen, passed Apr 93". No photocopies are included.
23. Piotr Constantinovich (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New

Submitter will accept unspecified changes and wants a late 13th century masculine Russian name retaining the sound. His documentation for Piotr, dated 1563, is from the online edition of Paul Goldschmidt's Period Russian Names at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/pa.html under the header spelling <Petr>. He says that the same source shows
Constantin as a variant of Konstiantin with the patronymic form shown in the name example "Vladimir Konstantinovich".

Her name is registered in the spelling <Rowen> although she uses the spelling "Rowan". She was made a Court Baroness on 11 January AS XXVI and is therefore entitled to the use of a coronet as per the recent Laurel ruling. The enflaming is plain gules in the color emblazon.
