Unto the An Tir College of Heralds, greetings to all on this day from Rafaella Lions Blood. There’s two months of stuff in this letter so bear with me...

Commentary on this Letter is due 19 March 2000.

Thanks to all who commented at/for the November meeting: our host Ciaran Cluana Fuerta, Teceangl Bach with Sebastian Sterne, Eglentyne Merryweather, Simon von der Eisenhandlung,Fionghuala Friseil, Rosamund of the Misty Meadows and Dianna of the Silver Shore with Jason ye Seolfer-tunged, Frederic Badger, David of Moffat with Kathryn of Falconskeep and Natasha Orionova Zateeva, Francesca Testarossa de Martini, Zenobia Naphtali, Elisabeth de Rossignol, and Aethelfrith se Hluda. My thanks also to His Lordship Ciaran for donation of plain white paper to the LB office and to his lady, Dame Giuliana Benevoli for fabulous gnoshes, especially the cheesecake.

And now the honor roll for the December meeting: our hosts Leith an Amhrenai and Alisaundre ni Fheidhlimidh, Elisabeth de Rossignol, David of Moffat with Kathryn of Falconskeep and Natasha Orionova Zateeva, Teceangl Bach with Sebastian Sterne, Eglentyne Merryweather, Zenobia Naphtali, Aethelstan aet Karlioli, Vasilisa Myshikina, Fionn B·n MacAoidh, Francesca Testarossa de Martini, and Saeunn Hrafnsdottir.

News: As many of you may have read on the An Tir Herald’s list, my poor old 486 PC gave its last gasp in early December. I can receive email during work hours, but if you need an answer to something quickly, it’s better to give me a call in the evening. Between 7pm-10pm is best except for Tuesday which is my evening off. I’m in the process of getting a newer used PC and hope to be back to normal operations sometime in January.

More Notes: I’ve been getting a fair amount of returned mail lately. Please advise your submitters (or tell folks when you are consulting) that if they move while an item is in submission to please send me their change of address. I know that this is pretty low-priority when it comes to the list of things to do when moving, but I sure hate for these Acceptance letters especially not to find their People. Okay, ‘nuff said.

Gules, semy of annulets a sinister hand in benediction argent.

The following have been returned for further work:

BrĢg ingen Beth·in (Dragon’s Mist) Device New

Lozengy argent and azure, an ivy leaf inverted vert

Returned for conflict with Bela of Eastmarch, (Tinctureless) A grape leaf inverted dependent from a tendril, and with Gryffyn Dunham, (Fieldless) A trefoil inverted vert. Since a grape leaf, a trefoil, and an ivy leaf are quite similar in outline, there is only one clear difference between the devices, that given for field versus fieldless.

Cairbre mac Eochaid mac Feidlimid (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

Argent a stag rampant sable

Returned for conflict with Morgana le Coeur, Per fess wavy, barry wavy argent and azure and Or, in base a hart rampant sable and with BriŪn MagFhloinn, Argent a stag rampant sable. The first has only one clear difference for the field, while the second has no difference.

Cairbre mac Eochaid mac Feidlimid (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

Sable a stag rampant argent

Returned for conflict with Alaric of Lochmere, Sable, a stag rampant argent between three acorns Or and with Earl of Morris, 9/97, Lozengy sable and gules a hart rampant argent, and with Aldwyn ap Llewelyn, Purpure a stag salient argent. The first has only once clear difference for removal of the secondary charge group. The other two have only the difference for the field. There is no significant difference between salient and rampant.

Cairbre mac Eochaid mac Feidlimid (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

(Fieldless) A stag rampant argent

Returned for conflict with Earl of Morris, 9/97, Lozengy sable and gules a hart rampant argent, and with Aldwyn ap Llewelyn, Purpure a stag salient argent. There is only the one clear difference for field versus fieldless. There is no significant difference between salient and rampant.

GuisĖppe Giordano Maria FalcioniĖri (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Purpure a smith’s hammer bendwise argent in base two walnuts cracked and halved Or

Returned because the device could not be accurately reproduced by an artist working strictly from the blazon. The nuts would not have been drawn in this three dimensional perspective in period, and would probably not have been arranged in this manner in relation to the hammer. It would be better period style to place one whole nut on either side of the hammer.

Maeve Hillery (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Per bend sinister argent and azure a bunch of grapes slipped and leaved proper and a chalice argent

Returned as it was found to conflict with Martiniana Vinokurova, Per bend sinister argent and gules, a grape bunch gules slipped and leaved vert and a goblet argent. There is only one CD between your proposed device and this one as with the change of half the field color. There is no default color for bunches of grapes in Society heraldry, and as the emblazon used a reddish-purple color it was difficult to distinguish which of the two tinctures were being used.

Robert Grylion (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New

Per bend sinister dovetailed vert and argent a mullet and a lion’s face counterchanged.

Returned we could not substantiate its construction as being compatible with period practice. As noted in your documentation, Jonsjo documents <Kydewild> but the formation of the construction is [animal]+[characteristic]. In Reaney & Wilson’s Dictionary of English Surnames we find <Grylle> under the heading "Grill" dated to 1327 meaning "fierce, cruel". In the same source <Leon> is dated to 1279. The spelling "Lion" does not seem to be a spelling used in 14th c. England. We find the name <Leonhard> meaning "lion-bold" in this same text, so it seems more likely that your intended meaning of "cruel as a lion" would more likely be constructed as <Leongrylle>, resulting in the name of <Robert Leongrylle>. As we cannot forward a device to Laurel without a name to go with it, your device submission is also being returned.

Roscelin the Silversmith’s Daughter (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Argent, a fuschia proper, slipped and nowed vert

Returned as it was found to conflict with Keinwen Ragnarsdottir, (Fieldless) a columbine purpure slipped and leaved vert.. There is only one clear difference between the devices with in the addition of the field tincture.

Ruadhan ²Faol·in (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Azure a chevron argent between three seawolves erect argent each maintaining a torch enflamed argent

Returned as it was found to conflict with Beorn Collenferth, Azure a chevron between a harp an axe reversed and a sabre toothed tiger statant argent, and with Angela of The Stoney Oak Forest, Azure a chevron between two acorns and an oak leaf argent. In each case, there is only one clear difference for the change of type of secondaries.

Ulric Morgan (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Sable, a bend sinister Or voided gules between two mullets of four Or

Returned as it was found to conflict with Elaine of Wogen Cavern, Sable, a bend sinister gules fimbriated Or between a mullet and a pegasus rampant to sinister Or. There is only one clear difference between the devices with in the type of secondary charges (mullet vs. pegasus).

Werburg of Wenlock (Lion’s Gate) Device New

Argent, five pavilions within a bordure embattled sable.

Returned for a redraw. The pavilions need to be drawn with less stylization in order to be reproducible from the blazon as pavilions.

The following have been Returned for Further Work (Dec. mtg):

Blatha an Oir, Barony of, for L’Ordre de l’HĖrme d’Or (Michael McCabe) Badge New

Vert two kerykeia surmounted by a head of hermes affronty Or

Returned for documentation of the kerykeia. Such a charge is so far unknown to the Society College of Arms.

According to precedent set in Da'ud ibn Auda's 2nd tenure, 5/94, page 17, the first registration of any charge by the College of Arms would be the "defining instance"; therefore it requires documentation: either that it appeared in period armory in this form or that it is a period artifact and that this is its standard or typical form. If the intent is to register this charge as a local or regional variant of a staff, please also note that Laurel has ruled in other instances that 12 examples are needed to support a local or regional difference.

GeneviĖve de Clairvaux les Lacs (Appledore) Device New

Sable, on a bend sinister argent, 3 decrescents azure between a lion rampant turned to sinister and a fleur-de-lis Or.

Returned as it was found to conflict with æed F·id (2/98), Sable, on a bend sinister argent between two flames Or three eyes fesswise azure. There is only one clear difference between your proposed device and this one with the change in the type of secondaries.

Julina de Beaumont (Blatha an Oir) Name and Device New

Vert on a bend sinister argent three lilies sable

We could find no supporting documentation for the name "Julina" being used in period. The submitter could choose to use the "mundane name allowance". The device submission was found to conflict with Leslie the Brown (6/86), Vert, on a bend sinister argent a hermit thrush close proper [Hylocichla guttata].. There is only one clear difference between your proposed device and this one with the change in the type of charges on the bend.

Kateryn atte Crouche (Blatha an Oir) Device   New

Gules a pall argent overall a cat sejant affronty sable tail nowed tri scaley

Returned for contrast problems as the black cat is mostly on the red field which is not allowed. The Rules state that "The field must have good contrast with every charge placed directly on it and with charges placed overall.."[RfS VIII.2.b.i]

Kenric inn Kyrri (Coeur du Val) Device New

Per pale azure and sable a sledge hammer and an open book argent

Returned for the appearance of marshalling. In period arms that were marshalled, the arms of a married couple would be "impaled" or placed side-by-side along the center line of division on the shield. The problem may be cleared by using a complex line of division (such as embattling, indenting, or wavy).

Mattittiyahu von Mod’in (Appledore) Name and Device New

Per pale purpure and Or, per chevron in chief 3 mullets of 6 points counterchanged

Returned for appearance of presumption on the name (as submitted makes it appear that he is trying to be or recreate the historical revolt leader of the Maccabees). This is disallowed under Rules for Submission, I.3: Inappropriate Claims - No name or armory will be registered which claims for the submitter powers, status, or relationships that do not exist. Without a name, the device was also returned.

Piotr Constantinovich (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Azure on a chief or three bollards sable, a viking longship oarless with sail furled argent

Returned for documentation of the bollard. Such a charge is so far unknown to the Society College of Arms. See the Da’ud precedent under the return for Blatha an Oir, Barony of, above.

Piotr Constantinovich (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

A bollard sable.

His name is submitted above. Returned for same reasons as above.

Ruadhan ²Faol·in (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

Azure three kerykiae conjoined in center overall a dolphin naiant embowed argent

His name was registered in July of 1998. Returned for documentation of the kerykeia. Such a charge is so far unknown to the Society College of Arms. See the Da’ud precedent under the return for Blatha an Oir, Barony of, above.

Ruadhan ²Faol·in (Blatha an Oir) Badge New

Azure three kerykiae conjoined in center overall a dolphin naiant embowed Or

His name was registered in July of 1998. Returned for same reason as above.

Seachnasach O Braonain (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Per chevron azure and vert base fimbriated two winged dogs sejant erect combattant argent in base a goblet Or

Returned for fimbriation of a line of division, which is not allowable.

Solveig Tryggvasdottir (Wastekeep) Badge New

Returned as it was found to conflict with 16 protected pieces of armory. Such as Holy Roman Empire (device, registered Dec. ’94): Or, a double-headed eagle displayed sable (sometimes crowned, sometimes also nimbed Or) and Holy Roman Empire (device, registered Dec. ’94): Or, an eagle displayed sable (sometimes crowned, sometimes also nimbed Or).

Sunnifa Amundsdottir (Blatha an Oir) Device New

Azure two piles argent overall a turtle passant guardant or shelled vert, a chief argent ermined

Her name is on the August 1999 Internal Letter.

Returned for style and contrast problems. The proposed device has a large green shell laying mostly on a blue field which is not allowed. Although the turtle is underlain in part by two white piles, the device was found to be unidentifiable from any distance, which negates the primary purpose of a device – identification of the bearer. Additionally we found it hard to see from a reasonable distance that the turtle is guardant (facing out). The traditional posture for a turtle is tergiant.

Thanks again to everyone who commented on the last couple months of EXTREMELY long letters!

Honestly, you don’t know how much I appreciate it.--RdA

And now, onto the new stuff...

New Submissions:

1. Avacal, Principality of, for the Order of the Griffin's Flame (Rick Slansky, Avacal) Badge, New

Quarterly argent and Or, an eagle's claw fesswise couped cupping a flame gules.

The name was registered in Sept. 1993. The submission is signed by HH Valeria. The flame is entirely gules.

2. Avacal, Principality of, for the Order of the Gilded Griffin (Rick Slansky, Avacal) Badge, Appeal

(Fieldless) A griffin segreant Or.

The submission is signed by HH Valeria. The Order Name was registed in Oct. 1998. This is my first handling of an appeal so in the spirit of education I'm going to discuss the process of an appeal.

Here is the text from the Administrative Handbook regarding appeals:

IV. E. Right of Appeal - A submitter shall have the right to appeal any return to the administrative level immediately above that at which the submission was returned. All appeals must be supported by new documentation or other proof that the original submission was returned in error or by compelling evidence that the submission was not properly considered at the time of return. [my emphasis --RdA] Appeals must be submitted through the appropriate heraldic officers specified for such actions by the submitter' kingdom of residence. Such officers must forward the appeal in a timely manner, with or without recommendations, to the appropriate level. Once all avenues of appeal within the heraldic hierarchy have been exhausted, appeal may be made directly to the Board of Directors.

This makes an appeal a special kind of resubmission. As Lions Blood ("the appropriate heraldic officers specified for such actions"), I am putting this submission through our regular submissions process (that's "timely manner"), however it cannot be returned again at Kingdom, but will (actually must) be sent to Laurel on the March LoI. As the An Tir College of Heralds, we have the option of "recommending" that the item be registered or not ("with or without recommendations").

Commentary should address whether the appeal [text following] meets the above requirements and whether you recommend/do not recommend/have no comment regarding the registerability of the badge. Please quote the Rules for Submissions in your commentary more than you might normally.

The following letter of appeal was sent with this submission:

"Appeal on Badge for Gilded Griffin, Order of the

Submitted along with the submission form 21 Nov 99 by Mordecai Salzer OP Sanguinaris Herald of Avacal for the Principality of Avacal.

Submitted was "(Fieldless) A griffin segreant Or."

Although I did not receive an official notification of return for this badge, I have been informed by Lion's Blood Herald of the following:

"I show the badge (fieldless) A griffin segreant Or returned in Kingdom for conflict in 5/98; conflict was with Degary Golafre of Pembroke's Quarterly sable and gules, a griffin segreant coward bearing in her dexter talon a Celtic cross and in her sinister talon a sword inverted Or. One CD for fieldlessness."

I would submit that the combination of two significantly sized maintained objects by the griffin in Degary's device should constitute one CD.

From the Precedents of Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane:

Charges, Maintained

[A quill pen maintained by a cubit arm fesswise] Note that in the new rules (Changes to Charges on Charges, X.4.j) it is noted that "charges maintained by other charges are generally too insignificant to count towards difference at all." The qualifier was placed in this rule expressly to deal with situations like this where the object held is in fact of equal size to the being/thing maintaining it. (As opposed to the usual situation where a beast maintains a sword/flower/other artifact which is considerably smaller in size and design importance.) In terms of size and design importance the feather is equal to the cubit arm in this design and thus can be treated as having full weight for purposes of difference. (LoAR 21 Jan 90, pp. 3-4)

Here Laurel is conceding that the size of the maintained object has bearing on whether it contributes to difference and that the qualifier "generally" allows some flexibility in this area. I would also point out that, while a sword will not generally be as large as the charge maintaining it, it is still relatively large enough not to be blazoned as a dagger. Although I have not seen the emblazon for Degary's device, I would surmise that the Celtic Cross is at least large enough to be identifiable as such. I suggest that the two maintained charges should be considered as a single charge group and large enough to constitute at least as much difference as a charge placed entirely on the Griffin, which would be one CD.

I also point out that the current version of the rules, published Nov 1, 1995 no longer has the note about maintained charges. Thus the addition of the each maintained charge could be considered either on the Griffin which would allow a CD under X.4.i or on the Field which would allow a CD under X.4.b.

As far as a visual test, I would submit that the Griffin of Degary's device is carrying a visually significant amount of hardware. If the charges are drawn properly according to the blazon and large enough to be identifiable, they take up at least as much area of the shield as other charges that would normally count for a difference and are large enough relative to the Griffin's talons, to not disappear.

I thank you for your consideration and await your response.

In service to Avacal and An Tir.

Master Mordecai Salzer

Sanguinaris Herald of Avacal"

3. Elisabeth de Besanēon (Glymm Mere) Name and Device, Resub/Kingdom

Per fess wavy azure and Or, in chief five gouttes argent in base an annulet vert.

She previously submitted "Elisabeth of Evergreen Shores" which was returned Aug. 1999 for construction problems. The device is the same as before. <Elisabeth> is from p. 100 (sub. Elizabeth) of Withycombe, showing "Elisabeth Culter 1483". < Besanēon> is shown to be an Imperial Free City in the County of Burgundy (modernly France?) shown on a map of "Territories belonging to the House of Burgundy in the 15th century" which is photocopied from Early Flemish Painting by Jean-Claude FrĖre, p. 207. The submitter cares most about the meaning of the name.

4. Morgaine of Glastonbury (Aquaterra) Name, New

The submitter will not accept major changes and wishes a name appropriate for a 12th-16th century Anglo-Norman lady. She cares most about the sound. Various spellings of <Morgaine> are discussed in a long email taken from the ArthurNet discussion list, and authored by Michael Twomey, Professor/Chair of English at Ithaca College. With all due respect to Professor Twomey, we could really use some help on documenting this name more directly. It appears that <Morgaine> might be found in French, but he doesn't give an exact citation. The email specifically states "'Morgaine' does not occur in English in the Middle Ages, though the spelling 'Morgain' does." <Morgain> is cited from the Lovelich, Merlin (mid 15th century) and English Prose Merlin (ca. 1450-60), does anyone have these? I think the submitter would be better served by using the mundane name allowance and have asked her for copies of her driver's license. There is no supporting documentation for <Glastonbury>.

5. Perrin del Bosc (Wyewood) Device, Resub/Kingdom

Argent, a fess gules between three fir trees sable.

His name is currently at Laurel. The previous device submission, Argent, a fess bendy sinister gules and sable between three fir trees sable, was returned in Oct. 1999 for contrast issues of the fess. We recommended the trees be blazoned "couped" and I think that applies to this resub as well. Lovely.

6. Salih al Hasan ibn Da'ud al Hashimi (Dragon's Mist) Name and Device, Resub/Kingdom

Per bend sinister embowed counterembowed azure and argent, in pale a natural salamander counterembowed Or conjoined to another inverted and embowed gules.

The previous name submission of "Salah al Hassan" was returned in Sept. 1999 as we find that <Salah> was used only as a title, it is not a given name. The device was clear but we suggested a redraw as the line of division needed a little more oomph. The submitter has redrawn as suggested. He will accept changes on the name and wishes a male name appropriate for the 15th-16th century, presumably for Islamic/Middle Eastern area. An email from Da'ud ibn Auda (the SCA Arabic naming expert) says "Salih al Hasan ibn Da'ud al Hashimi" should work fine". Photocopies from The Fihrist of al-Nadim: a Tenth-century survey of Muslim culture by Bayard Dodge, vol. II, are included. Copies are from the biographical index (many of which have dates showing these folks lived between 700-1000 CE), <Salih> from p. 1091, showing 18 examples of the name, although this shows Arabic diacritical markings with a dot below the "s" and the "h", and a line over the "a". There are 16 examples of <Hasan> (with a dot under the "h") on p. 1000, although on p. 1001 there is the specific example of "Hashimi (al-), Abu al-Hasan" which is also part of the 5 examples showing <Hashimi> (lines over the "a" and the final "i"). <Da'ud> is found in 19 examples on p. 979 (lines over the "a" and the "u").

7. Vingaard, Canton of [Incipient] (Vingaard) Name and Device, New

Quarterly sable and gules, a goblet argent within a laurel wreath Or.

The submission includes separate petitions for the name and the device, signed by the Seneschal, 7-8 other officers, and another 19-20 citizens (nicely done!) They will not accept major changes on the name and wish an authentic Norse name caring most about sound and meaning. The meaning is stated as being "wine-farm". <Vin-> is supported by the name "Vinland" from p. 274 of Else Roesdahl's The Vikings, rev. ed. <-gaard> is used as in the Shire of Ramsgaard (An Tir) and Nithgaard (AEthelmearc). As we repeat often, previous registerability is no indication of current registerability, so help with documenting the name parts is appreciated.

8. Werburg of Wenlock (Lion's Gate) Device, Resub/Kingdom

Argent, five pavilions within a bordure embattled sable.

Her name is currently at Laurel. The previous submission Argent, within a bordure embattled five pavilions sable, was returned as the pavilions were overly stylized. This submission has nice little tents and our blazon fu suggestion as well.
